Snoring and Sleep Apnea Therapy
It's way more than annoying. You could die!
Snoring can be more than just annoying. Not only is the other person in the bed is also suffering, but If you snore, it may be a sign of a serious condition called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Patients who suffer from sleep apnea experience many episodes of interrupted breathing during sleep, even if they don’t awaken enough to remember it in the morning. When soft tissues in the back of the throat collapse, the airway becomes restricted and breathing ceases for at least 10 seconds. Oxygen levels drop until the brain signals for the need to restart breathing, and then the person will gasp for breath and awake, and then fall back asleep to begin the cycle all over again. Over and over and over.
Besides snoring, other symptoms of sleep apnea include daytime drowsiness, memory loss, and irritability. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to an increased risk for many health issues, such as high blood pressure, heart problems, and strokes.
We are part of the good sleep team
The dentist's role in identifying and treating snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has become more important as the public has become more aware of sleep disorders. We often partner with physicians who are treating sleep apnea and work cooperatively with them. It is truly a wonderful thing when our patients tell us that we have changed their lives.
And here's terrific good news! We can easily arrange for you to have a screening sleep study in your own home, in your own bed, in comfortable, familiar surroundings, instead of in a sleep center based in a hospital. It will show whether you have sleep apneea and at what level: mild, moderate or severe. If necessary we can arrange for a sleep center sleep test that is more comprehensive. In all cases, a qualified sleep physician will read your sleep test and issue a report for us to discuss with you.
And here's more great news! The cost of a home sleep study is only about $350.
CPAP is the gold standard for sleep apnea treatment. But if you are using CPAP for your OSA, and hate it, or even worse, don't use it, we have something that can help (and maybe save your life).
We offer conservative snoring and sleep apnea treatment with comfortable oral appliances like the Somnodent MAS that are worn in sleep. They can change your life – or even save it!
