~Drill-Less Dentistry
One of the most significant advances of the last half of the 20th century
in dentistry was the high speed drill. Now in the 21st century dentistry
is moving toward a different way of shaping teeth.
Air Abrasion is a way of wiping away tooth structure with a mixture of
air and mild abrasive particles. It is almost completely silent, totally
free of vibration and heat, and it can be used in the treatment of small
to medium sized cavities in intact teeth. Although it can not be used
for teeth needing extensive restoration yet, such as inlays and crowns,
tor for the removal of large metal fillings, the air abrasion system is
rapidly becoming more versatile.
No Shot: Generally an anesthetic injection is unnecessary. The
only time there would be any sensation is if a tooth is very air or cold
sensitive anyway. We have restored many hundreds of teeth with air abrasion
and only about one person in 50 required an anesthetic.
No Drill: Thats right. Except for maybe gently touching
up the bite sometimes after we are finished restoring the tooth, the drill
is not needed for air abrasion treatment.
Air abrasion is so exciting! Its part of the high-tech revolution
in dentistry that we are so proud to be part of.
